The Azeri Cable Guy Leaves Me Hanging

On Thursday, I worked from home so I could have a few workmen come visit the house. Our walls are made of concrete and it is impossible to hang pictures without a super powerful drill. (On my first try, I actually broke a drill bit.) I also wanted to try to set up the cable.

The picture hanging was a success. Our apartment finally looks like a lived-in home. Setting up the television, on the other hand, was not. Through a mix of Russian, English, and Azeri, I learned that it was "impossible" to install a dish on our roof without talking to our landlord. I also learned that I do not know the verb "to set up" in Russian, which is a major hole in my vocabulary. After about three hours and a jumbled Azeri-Russian-English phone conversation, the cable guy finally gave up on me.

So tonight, I'm sitting on the couch knitting and listening to NPR podcasts. If it was an old crackly radio, this could be a scene from the 1940s. Instead, I've come full circle. Radio instead of television, just through a modern medium.

And you know, Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me! is probably better than anything on Azeri cable.
